Photographs taken during the Midwest USA tour,
January 1999.
A rehearsal and pre-concert sound check shot at the FermiLab Auditorium,
Batavia IL. Inbetween sound checks, Kaigal-ool and Alyosha discovered the
Steinway grand piano tucked away backstage, and couldn't resist the temptation.
One wonders what the combination of piano and traditional Tuvan music might
sound like!
Alyosha takes a quick practice round on the igil, backstage
at the FermiLab. Notice he is sporting the cool "Kieku" shirt, trademark
of the Finnish
Throat Singing Society. HHT is on the 1999 spring program in Tampere.
Tolya Kuular backstage at the Cedar Center, Minneapolis, showing off
the byzaanchi, a precious work of woodcarving art. Every peg on
the instrument is a miniature carving, representing a Siberian tiger.
Here in traditional garb...
.... and here in a more relaxed setting, in Steve and Johnna's living room
in Minneapolis. Curious about the shirt? Check out the Orcas
Chamber Music Festival page! Tuvan musicians have connections all over
the world, even in the classical music circuit.
A studio performance for the "Backstage Pass" program on
Detroit Public Television.
