Anatoli Kuular

Tolya (Anatoli Kuular) plays the byzaanchi, a string instrument with the bow permanently looped around the strings. Instead of pressing down on the fretboard, Tolya pushes up against the strings.

Anatoli Kuular

Tolya sings in the borbangnadyr style, a type of throat-singing that imitates the sound of rolling, flowing. He produces a harmonic melody of just the right rhythm, pitch and timbre to meld with the dancing harmonics produced by a rushing stream. An astonishing track of Tolya's borbangnadyr in harmony with the flowing water is featured on the CD "Tuva: Among the Spirits". A Quicktime video clip "Borbangnadyr" is also available on Steve's site.
